IBM Global University Programs– IBM University Awards support basic research, curriculum innovation, and educational assistance in focus areas that are fundamental to innovation in the 21st Century and strategic to IBM’s core business.
A self-service program that provides students and faculty at accredited academic institutions with access to select IBM resources at no-charge for teaching, learning and non-commercial research. Building holistic relationships with academic institutions. We are the intersection of academia and IBM providing technology, supporting research and creating assets to advance relevant skills for today’s workforce.
A skills-oriented training program to empower students of various backgrounds with the skills needed to excel in today’s high-demand technologies.

IBM PhD Fellowship Award
The IBM PhD Fellowship Program advances this collaboration by recognizing and supporting exceptional PhD students who want to make their mark in promising and disruptive technologies. Focus areas include the following topics of particular interest:
- Hybrid Cloud
- Quantum Computing / Quantum Systems
- Artificial Intelligence
- Cloud / Open Source Technologies
- Security / Cyber Security
- Data Science
- Systems
The program seeks to increase the number of underrepresented minority students in the referenced science topics of interest by encouraging a diverse applicant pool.
The IBM Masters Fellowship Program
The IBM Masters Fellowship Program advances this collaboration by recognizing and supporting exceptional Masters students who want to make their mark in promising and disruptive technologies, regardless of their field of study. Candidates may currently be enrolled in Masters programs in the sciences, arts, nursing, business, law among a few with focus areas in the following topics of particular interest:
- Hybrid Cloud
- Quantum Computing / Quantum Systems
- Artificial Intelligence
- Cloud / Open Source Technologies
- Security / Cyber Security
- Data Science
- Systems
The program seeks to increase the number of underrepresented minority students from disadvantaged backgrounds in the referenced science topics of interest by encouraging a diverse applicant pool from historically Black colleges and universities, in the United States.
IBM Academic Awards
IBM Global University Program’s Academic Awards scale from an individual faculty member’s research to much larger university-based concepts and programs. IBM Global University Programs does not limit proposal ideas within rigid frameworks or requests for proposals. The IBM Academic Award program fosters collaboration between researchers at leading universities and IBM Researchers and Technologists worldwide. IBM Academic Awards can also promote curriculum innovation to stimulate growth in emerging academic disciplines. IBM Academic Awards can consist of hardware, software, services, IBM Cloud access, and cash components. IBM Academic Awards are not contracts, and intellectual property belongs to the university.
Benefits
IBM PhD Fellowship Award
The 2021 two-year IBM PhD Fellowships are awarded worldwide.
- US country awards: $60,000 in award year one; $35,000 in award year two
Other country awards: vary between $6,000-$25,000 each award year depending on the country - All IBM PhD Fellowship awardees will be mentored by an IBMer in order to collaborate on a research or technology project for the duration of the award period and are strongly encouraged to do an internship during the first or second year of their award.
The IBM Masters Fellowship Program
The 2020 one-year IBM Masters Fellowships are awarded to students from historically Black colleges and universities in the United States.
- US country award: $10,000 in a single award year
IBM Academic Awards
Academic Awards can include;
- monetary support,
- IBM Cloud resources, equipment, services, or software.
- Optimally, these awards should reach their outcomes within one year.
Eligibility
- Nominations are welcome for students of all nationalities.
- Students must be nominated by a doctoral faculty member and must be a full-time student in a PhD program over the two consecutive academic years of the award or forfeit their fellowship. ( For IBM PhD Fellowship Award)
- Students must be nominated by a faculty member and must be a full-time student in a Masters program. ( For IBM Masters Fellowship Program)
- Students should have at least 6 months remaining in their graduate program at the time of nomination. (For IBM Masters Fellowship Program).
- Students should have three years remaining in their graduate program at the time of nomination. For example, nominees that are enrolled in a four-year graduate program should have completed two years of their graduate program as of summer 2021 in order to benefit the most. (for IBM PhD Fellowship Award)
- Students from US embargoed countries are not eligible for the program.
- Award recipients will be selected based on their overall potential for research excellence, the degree to which their technical interests align with those of IBM, and their academic progress to – date, as evidenced by publications and endorsements from their faculty advisor and department head.
- Students receiving a comparable fellowship or internship from another company or institution (does not include academic scholarships) during the same IBM funded academic period may not be eligible for an IBM PhD Fellowship or IBM Masters Fellowship
- Nominee for IBM Global University Program Academic Award must be a full-time professor at an accredited university that has a PhD or Masters’ program in the nominee’s field. (For IBM Academic Award)
- Candidates must have outstanding contributions in their field, or in the case of junior faculty, show unusual promise. (For IBM Academic Awards)
- The university credential email addresses must be entered in the nomination form.
